Southern Lights Special Activities

We all join together for Round Dancing and Western Style Square Dancing each first and third Saturday night at the air-conditioned rec hall in Whitmire Activity Building* (Hendersonville NC). Early rounds start at 7:00 p.m.; Plus square dancing starts at 7:30 p.m. Western North Carolina's nationally known Stan Russell is our caller. Stan has sharp eyes. If you get mixed up on occasion (that happens to all of us - it's part of the fun) he knows how to bail you out.

Social Events

In addtion to our regular dances, we enjoy other social events together. We have sponsored potluck dinners, mystery trips to special dances, and freqently present demo dances at local events, such as the Apple Festival. We have two membership meetings each year — one at a picnic in June and and another at the holiday dinner/dance in December. Informally, some members have arranged to vacation together at far-away places — like Tuscany, Ireland, and Thailand. Friendships made on the dance floor extend beyond — even resulting in a couple of weddings!

Habitat for Humanity Blitzbuild

Hammers in hand, about forty members from the Southern Lights Square Dance Club spent Saturday, October 14th jump starting a home for Habitat for Humanity.  When the volunteers arrived in the morning only the foundation and subflooring were in place. By the time they left, the house was ready for  regular Habitat volunteers to begin the interior work. In March of 2006, Henderson County Habitat for Humanity launched their Blitz Build Program in which church, club and business groups complete the exterior structure of a Habitat home in a single day. Hundreds of people have participated in eight Blitz Builds this year.  The success of this program has been tremendous.  The program has enabled Habitat to accelerate the pace of home construction, thus Habitat partner families can move into their homes sooner. The next Blitzbuild is scheudled for Saturday, October 13, 2007.

Community Support

Each year the club makes significant contributions to area charities, most notably to Four Seasons Hospice. Each August we also distribute school supplies to needy children at a local elementary school.

This August, the Southern Lights Square and Round Dance Club continued its tradition of collecting school supplies for Bruce Drysdale School. This month their effort netted over six bushel baskets of items to be distributed to students at the school. L to R: Connie Palmer, President, Christopher, Mary Sams, Vice President, Bill Palmer, President, and Dr. Constance Brown, Principal.

Dancing Beyond

Club members regularly travel to area clubs to enjoy dancing to other callers and support their members. Many of our members attend regional and national square dance conventions. Think about joining us for the 2008 National Convention in Witchita, Kansas!
