Special Events & Activities
Social Events
In addition to our regular dances, we enjoy other social events together. We have sponsored potluck dinners, mystery trips to special dances, and frequently present demo dances at local events, such as the Apple Festival. We have two membership meetings each year — one at a picnic in June and another at the holiday dinner/dance in December. Informally, some members have arranged to vacation together at far-away places — like Tuscany, Ireland, and Thailand. A large group went on a sqaure dance trans-Atlantic cruise last spring.
Friendships made on the dance floor extend beyond — even resulting in a couple of weddings! Club members regularly travel to area clubs to enjoy dancing to other callers and support their members. Many of our members attend regional and national square dance conventions. Think about joining us for the National Square dance Convention in June 2011 in Detroit.
Community Support
Southern Lights Square Dance Club takes pride in giving to the community. Several projects each year donate member’s time and/or money to various charitable organizations. Our latest project was a Charity Auction of items handcrafted and donated by members of the Southern Lights Square Dance Club in December. Half the proceeds from the auction were presented to Mike Tate, President of Henderson County Habitat for Humanity by Southern Lights President Alan Bly. The remaining half will be donated as well. Present for the presentation were: Julie Huneycutt, Director, and Mike Tate President of Henderson County Habitat for Humanity along with Southern Lights representatives Alan Bly, President; Don Boelke, Treasurer; and Bill Dice, Auction Chairman.
